In West Bengal, the Mithun Chakraborty Citizens' Welfare Organisation is a registered body engaged in social service activities. The fan club, which was set up 20 years ago and has a following of 20,000, was earlier called the Mithun Fan Club, but changed to its present name in 1996 with a view to attracting "non-frivolous" people. "We tried to make it an organisation of people who are serious about doing some social service in their free time," explains Biman Sarker, an advocate and President of the organisation which has 72 branches across the country and Bangladesh. "We are guided by the ideals of Mithun da who always tries to stand by the poor and needy," Sarker adds. But they've never asked the star to contribute money for their causes, which include providing legal aid and donating blood:
Then inception of MITHUN CITIZEN'S WELFARE ORGANISATION was in 16th June 1996 , We are the unit of MITHUN CITIZEN'S WELFARE ORGANISATION DURGAPUR that is established in the year 10th May 2000. With very few people to help social events and welfare organization we have established this organization. We create Thalasemia Awareness Camp every year on 16th June the birthday of Mithun da with a motto of helping poor and needed people and briliant student in there future. During the durgapuja festival we distribute clothes to poor people who are badly needed for this .
